A Letter from First Lady
H.E. Suzanne Mubarak

The world today is connected like no other time in history. Through the Internet and mobile communications, we are able to interact in real time with people on opposite sides of the planet on an unprecedented scale. We hope that this interaction will not only engender mutual understanding and respect, but also directly enhance in other ways the lives of people participating in the information and communications revolution. But the first barriers to participation in this technological revolution are access and education.

The Egyptian Education Initiative (EEI) is a tremendous opportunity to provide Egypt’s greatest asset, its people, with the skills necessary for the 21st century. Technology plays a vital role in today’s world. We undertook this initiative with the ambition of transforming Egyptian society through education, using technology as the integral ingredient for success. Technology is the most powerful tool we can employ to rapidly improve education, and so the EEI is a comprehensive plan to proliferate technological education throughout Egypt.

The Egyptian government is no stranger to education improvement. It has been my personal aspiration as First Lady to promote and invest in the future of Egyptian children. There are few greater rewards than the promise of a child’s future fulfilled. Furthermore, the EEI encompasses people of all ages, not just children. If we are to truly participate in the knowledge economy, we must have properly trained professionals. This not only includes students at university age, but also adults who undertake lifelong learning.

We realize, however, that transforming society at all levels to adopt technology is no easy task, and will require the hard work and cooperation of many individuals in various organizations. So the EEI is the accumulation of work from public-private partnerships in which the government, companies and civil society have all contributed to the betterment of society.

I am proud to be a part of the EEI, to be a part of something whose benefits will be felt both now and by generations to come. I am truly optimistic that this initiative will help the future of our children and the future of our country at large. I look forward not only to witnessing the measurable accomplishments of the EEI, but also the look on the faces of people who have had a whole new world opened up before them. By pushing yet further ahead with the EEI, we are creating a better future.

Sincerely,
